steppin up onto my soap-box

Have you seen this news story? An 11 year old girl in Wisconsin, who was suffering from diabetes and had been given NO medical treatement for 7 years, went into a coma and died as her parents stood by and PRAYED for her recovery. That's right, they refused to allow her to be treated by modern medicine, instead believing that GOD would take care of her. Now, as most of you know, I'm an avowed non-believer, but please tell me how two supposedly sane and rational grown people can honestly believe that God is going to save their daughter if they just pray enough. I've got a newsflash: God doesn't save people. If you want to believe God helped, that's fine. No harm in that, but the FACT is that it is medical intervention that cures people. Period the end.

This is where religion is dangerous. Very, very dangerous. When you've become so completely brain-washed that you deny your child medical care because "God's going to take care of it", you belong in mental hospital. Or prison. I strongly believe that these parents should be charged with murder. Do they have the right of "freedom of religion"? Of course. Do they have the right to sit by and pray feverishly as their daughter literally withers away to nothing right in front of them, slips into a coma and dies because they've denied her medical care? No. They do not.

And you KNOW that they will now say her death was "God's will". What I want to know is this: how can people worship a God that would "take" an 11 year old child by making her suffer such a horrible, painful, slow, death?

It makes no sense to me.

No, it was the parents who let her die. God gave man the intelligence to learn how to cure people through medicine and parents the brains to make intellegent decisions. But some religions interpret the Bible so completely wrong, that they don't believe in medical intervention. I don't believe God intended for people to use religion that way. (in the time of Jesus, there were doctors) It is meant for people to treat people nicely, "do unto others as you would have them do unto you". That means: if everyone followed that one simple sentence there would be no murders etc. ad nauseum, and parents wouldn't let children wither away.

I could go on, but I think you get the gist of my strong feelings.
And that's my soap box, and I'm stickin' to it.

That was so sad, and they are being charged with murder. I shouldn't, but one thing I think about when I hear about this type of things are people who also believe they shouldn't go to Medical doctors, but instead choose natural medicine. I believe in natural medicine, I'm a huge believer in acupunture, but if something doesn't work, ya gotta go with conventional medicine! I know a lot of people have died because they wouln't leave their natural resources and try something conventional. I just don't freakin' get some people's thought processes.

I hope those parents spend the rest of their lives in prison (and aren't allowed any medical care).

Well, as you know, I am one of those people who will go for the natural route when possible. BUT, if the natural route isn't working, it's time to try modern medicine. That's why, even though I had a totally natural child-birth, I did it in a hospital. Thankfully I didn't need medical intervention, but there was no way in hell I was willing to risk giving birth at home. If something had gone wrong, I never would have forgiven myself.

The weird thing is about those parents in the news: they say they don't even belong to a church!! They just believe in "laying on hands". And waiting for a "miracle".

Thats so sad. One of Tim's co-worker's wife just died last week right after a home child birth. They too didnt believe in medical intervention. I met her a couple times. Now this father is left with an infant and no wife. The baby will never know her mom... and it ALL could have been prevented. So sad...

Oh my god. That's horrible, Jacki! I can't imagine...what a shame. I mean, to DIE giving birth in this day and age is just so needless.

Home birth was VERY much the thing to do in Oregon when Anna was born. A friend of mine was determined to have her child at home and ened up having major complications and they had to get in the car and drive two hours to Portland while she's in the middle of a traumatic birth!! Luckily they made it, but can you imagine?

Plus, I wonder why would you want to give birth in your home, on your BED?? All that goo and blood and stuff? No. Just no.

PS. How's Kole?? Have you started your day-care yet?
