::back on my soap box::

So yes, we elected a wonderful, dynamic new President, but the state of California passed Proposition 8, which will ban same-sex marriage. Guess which powerful organization took a special interest in Prop 8 and donated over $22 million to the cause: MORMONS. I just find this so ironic, coming from a church who's founding father practiced (and demanded that his followers do the same) polygamy. Now, I don't know the ages of Joseph's Smiths many wives, but I do know that his most ardent followers today? They prefer their wives to be as young as 11. They're more "pliable" that way. But two consenting, adult men wanting to legally declare their love for each other? Now that's just sick, isn't it??

I will never understand how followers of religion can say that marriage of any kind is against "family values". "But two men can't procreate!" they shout. Well, guess what? Neither can an 11 year old. Also? I know this comes as a shock, but not every one in this country adheres to the teachings of the Bible. How can one religion declare what is and what is not moral for the rest the people of this country?

Not surprisingly, there are millions of people in this country who are outraged, and tomorrow has been designated a national day of protest against Prop 8. CLICK ON THE "No H8" IMAGE to the left to find out if there is a gathering in your town. If there is, I urge you to GO!!! Marriage is a CIVIL RIGHT, not a special privilege granted only to heterosexuals.

Or, as David says "Gays should have the right to be as miserable as the rest of us."

I love that guy.

Oh, man. After I saw the title of your post, here I was cracking my knuckles, getting ready to write a thesis on the origins of Capitalist thought, or somesuch, and it turns out I have nothing to argue here.

Kate, how could you do this to me?!?

(Without sarcasm, I hereby state my wholehearted agreement with all you said. The End.)

P.S. I don't crack my knuckles. Knuckle cracking is one of my pet peeves. And now you all can sleep better knowing that.

I know you are intitled your opinion. But you must know that you have many facts incorrect about Mormons. Joseph Smith had only one wife, her name was Lucy Mack Smith. Also, anybody who practices polygamy and says they are a mormon is confused...they are not members of the same church. Because mormons raised the most money for this prop, they still only accounted for 2% of the vote. There are many other christian churches and other non christians that voted too. You cannot point the finger at one church. You said your peace and I said mine.

I want to hear all about your rally/protest when you get home! They're having one in Boise today and if I didn't have so much to do, mom and I would have gone.

Don't get arrested!

It is sad that California has taken that step 'backward'. But there are so many states that have yet to take any kind of step forward.

There are so many issues, so many topics that need updated in our society. - sigh -

Driving past the Mormon Temple yesterday, I saw people standing on the Temple lawn with a huge sign that said " Shame on you LDS Church " etc. I thought that was sad to see that. In this country we have freedom of religion and freedom of speech, and those people should allow the Mormons their beliefs. And no, they were not voicing their opinion, they were protesting the opinion of others----on their property !

Sheri, I know it wasn't you! And Elmer signs his too.

I don't know who that anonymous" is but they are welcome to say their peace here, even if he/she does have a selective memory. ;)

The truth is (and this is well-documented in the writings about the history of the Mormon church), Joseph Smith started out with one wife, but then he fell in love with another woman. He asked Lucy if he could marry the second womanand when Lucy said no he went up on the mountain and - what do you know! - GOD HIMSELF spoke to Joseph that day and told him to take as many wives as he wanted. Which he did. And that is when polygamy became standard practice for Mormons.

To be fair to "anonymous" polygamy is now officially "shunned" by modern-day Mormons because it is against the law of the country; it is openly practiced only by Fundamentalist LDS.

Also, "anonymous": for the record, I have no problem with polygamy, as long as it is practiced by consenting ADULTS.

Im not sure where you are getting your information. I know Joseph Smith had one wife, although I was wrong one her name. It was Emma Smith. He was married to her only till he died. Polygamy started after he was killed. And mostly because so many men were killed do to persecution that many women were left alone to support themselves and children. I dont care much for the idea of polygamy, but I understand it is what was needed in that time period. And even if it wasn't against the law mormons would still not be practicing polygamy......because we live in a different time period where there is no need for it.
Bottom line marriage is between a man and woman.....that is me talking not my religion.

See, I love you because you are so joyously, wonderfully ranty. I love good rants. You do good rants.

I always give the mormon boys popsicles when they come to my door.

Wouldn't you think someone so rightous would sign their name to their comment? ;-)

I'm with you sister. I have many people in my life who are gay and they deserve the right to be miserable, er, married, if they want to, too!
